Taiichi Ohno, when at Toyota, set up the original 7 wastes:
- Overproduction
- Waiting
- Transportation
- Inappropriate Processing. ...
- Unnecessary Inventory. ...
- Unnecessary / Excess Motion. ...
- Defects
Missing, to me, was the most important: the underutilization of peoples's talents.
Just look at people at work. Just observe. Watch people doing the same thing over and over again. We go to school for maybe 13 years or more and then you stand there on the assembly line and maybe tighten ten screws on every car, every four minutes.
Yes, it is crazy. People went to the moon. People can do such amazing things if they are taught to expand themselves. Even at Toyota there is a 4 minute takt time and people stand on the line and do the same thing over and over again. That has to change. It should change.
Join me and John Ballis on July 3rd on zoom.us at 11:00am PDT to discuss and learn how you can lead this change.
