Me and my poor memory

I was probably the worst student in the ninth grade for I had such a poor memory. I was good in math but I just couldn’t learn a language and I just couldn’t remember things that I read. At that time, memory was critical to get good grades. Today you really don’t need a good memory for you have the Internet which contains so much of the world’s needed information. Miraculously, even though at times it’s been a real struggle I have done exceptionally well in my life, visiting over 52 countries and publishing hundreds of books and even writing seven..

My wife is the reverse; she is a doctor and has an amazing memory. Every day, We we say together the Heart Sutra. This is a spiritual poem from Japan which teaches you what life really is all about. I have read it in Japanese, maybe 1000 times and it just does not stick in my memory but my wife remembers every single-word.

I do wish I had a better memory but this is what life has given me and I’m grateful. I think our school system needs to change and not punish people like me but find a way to allow others like me to acquire information and apply it so that they can have a wonderful life.

Tell me what you think about this?

  1. Thank you for sharing. As a fellow of poor memory, your success gives me hope. What advice would you give for making up for such a poor memory. I do agree that at times it’s a blessing, but I would like to remember many more things.
