The Under-Utilization of People's Talents

This waste is the hardest to identify and eliminate.

Taiichi Ohno, VP at Toyota, created the 7 wastes. He would make a plant manager and other senior executives stand in a white circle in the middle of the plant for 8 hours in a day (only allowing time for a bathroom break), and just look for waste.

You should do the same. Go out to the plant floor or the office, stand there all day and just look for waste. See what people are doing. Notice the repetitive and boring work and then in your groups, help them identify opportunities to grow and improve their skills.

In the 1800's, work was done by artisans, skilled crafts people and then Henry Ford comes along with the assembly line and de-skilled labor. Sure Ford became the world's richest person in the world and everyone else copied him.

But you can change that. Work should give people the opportunity to grow.
